COURSE DESCIPTION
Vernacular architecture in Southeast Asia is an endless source of tropical architecture, interior and landscape design, as well as Asian design and lifestyle in general. It is a thriving medieval culture complete with god-kings and ancient philosophical principles tha inspire romantic and exotic designs of native bungalows, courtyard houses or religious architecture. Starting from the geographical context, the subject is explained in terms of socio-cultural aspects, cosmology, architectural principles and history. The topics of this subject will inculde Asian geomancy, vernacular architecture in Indonesia, particularly the traditional settlements in Bali, which includes its philosophy, design principles and typology.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Student are expected to achieve a general understanding of Southeast Asian countriies in the context of their social and cultural aspects, particularly with regards to domestic or vernacular architecture and traditional settlements. The course is designed to provide the students with knowledge about ethnic architecture, with special reference to the traditional architecture of Bali.
