Tropical Engineering is one among many international programs available within Udayana University. It is a cross disciplinary program that has been running since 2012. Previously, it had been recognized as Tropical living. The Program has progressed from a single focus on architecture into those of engineering, sport & physiotherapy. At present, the Tropical Engineering program offers five different courses that reflect disciplines related to Architecture and its sources; Civil Engineering; Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and now including Sports and Physiotherapy. While the latest program has been established as a collaborative effort between Engineering and the Medical Faculty of Udayana University, the origin of the other four programs reflects the four departments existing under the umbrella of the Engineering Faculty of Udayana University. This does not include the Department of Technology and Information which has not yet delivered its international program.

Being an academic driven program, Tropical Engineering was established to provide a medium for learning and sharing knowledge in the chosen field of study. The program is however designed for a large objective than merely academic learning. It provides its international participants with opportunities to experience and understand the nature, culture and practices of the culture within which tropical living take place. On top of academic and practical objectives, we believe that recreation plays an important part in learning. Given the fact that the Tropical Engineering Program is situated in the island of Bali, where culture and nature are integral part of Balinese people’s daily life, there objectives are pursued within the Balinese context as well as Indonesia and Southeast Asia to a large circumstance. The program therefore can be taken by international participants, who either are in need of academic credit points to complete their existing study at various university, or simply to enrich their experience of living overseas.

I therefore take this opportunity to welcome all international participants to join us in sharing, gaining, and revealing the great number of attractive experiences Bali has to offer, as well as those in the adjacent Indonesian Archipelago. We look forward to welcoming both new students and all interested parties in supporting the formation of an international Tropical Engineering community.
